4 Tips For Moving During COVID-19
It has become clear that the COVID-19 pandemic is not going away anytime soon, with cases spiking in different areas of the country. As it has become clear that COVID-19 is going to be around for a while, normal, everyday tasks like moving are being resumed. If you have to move right now, there are safety steps you can take to help keep you and your family safe during the moving process.
Tip #1: Pack Like Normal
For the most part, you can pack your belongings like you normally would. Go through your home and get rid of items you don't need. Clean your items before you pack them up. Pack items up carefully, using lots of cushioning, like soft fabrics or bubble wrap. Make sure you carefully label each box so you know where it should go in your new home.
If you are hiring a moving company to pack up your items, clean everything in your home ahead of time. Having a clean environment will help your moving company to keep things sanitary.
Keep in mind that COVID-19 doesn't survive for long on surfaces, so if you are worried about safety, just wait a few days to unpack your boxes when you get to your new home, and any viruses that are present should be dead.
Tip #2: Cover Up Your Furniture
The one area that you should approach differently is your furniture. You may want to wrap your furniture up in plastic that you can throw away once you get to your new home. Putting plastic over your furniture will help keep your furniture clean and safe for both you and your movers.
Tip #3: Give Your Moving Company Space
When your moving team shows up, provide them with any relevant instructions and information they need to safely pack up and move your home, and then give them space to work. Don't crowd the area or space; ideally, you and your family should leave the home or hang out in the backyard, allowing the movers to work without having to get close to you.
You can assist the movers by labeling which room boxes and furniture should go in when the moving truck reaches your new home. You can also put up signs in your new home, labeling each room so you don't have to be present to direct the movers on where to put things. The movers can just use the labeled rooms and boxes to figure out where things should go.
Tip #4: Leave Out Handwashing Items
A large part of preventing the spread of COVID-19 comes down to washing one's hands. Leave soap, paper towels, and a trash bag in your bathroom at your old home, and set up soap and paper towels in your new home, as well. That way, both your family and the movers can work to stay safe and sanitary.
Moving during the COVID-19 pandemic requires a little adjustment on your part and on your movers' part. You are going to want to give your movers space and leave supplies out so everyone can wash their hands. However, the other parts of the moving experience will be very much the same. The moving team will work hard to expertly pack up your items and move everything in a safe and secure manner.
